Day 20 – Spinach and Hemp Salad

Hemp SaladI was looking forward to this salad and I am sure is would be absolutely every bit as yummy as I think it would be.

It is strange how – after eating raw food at least once or twice a day for 20 days straight – you just want more of it.  There is no craving for pastry or sweets or meat or crackers… the thought of not eating a salad or fruit just doesn’t seem to ‘gel’ anymore.

What is strange about this recipe is what I found out about Hemp Seeds.  I live in Australia and I went to the Health Food shop on Saturday with my list of items and on the list was Hemp Seeds.

I bought my Hemp Seeds, Cocoa, Mesquite Powder and linseed meal and paid.

Upon arriving home and putting away my goodies I read the Hemp Seed package.  ‘This food is not for Human Consumption in Australia and New Zealand’ is what it read… so I did a little investigating.

Hemp history

Hemp has been used for more than 10,000 years and was probably one of the first plants to be cultivated by humans.

A piece of hemp fabric was found in Mesopotamia dating back to 8000BC. From the 5th century BC to the 1800’s hemp was used to make ropes and sails for ships.

Hemp has a long history of being used to make paper and clothes and as a staple food for humans and animals alike.

Hemp is one of the most versatile plants. it can be grown almost anywhere and requires very little pesticides or herbicides. Today there is a strong textile market for hemp and a growing food market.

Hemp seeds contain all the essential amino acids to support a human life.

Benefits of hemp seed

Hempseeds have been used to assist in the treatment of children with ADHD, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and bipolar disorder. They can increase energy levels, improve mood and optimise physical and mental abilities.

Unfortunately, despite the benefits of hemp, it is know for it’s narcotic effects and as such is illegal to grow in many countries.  In Australia and New Zealand you are not allowed to consume Hemp.

So perhaps try making this recipe for your pets – I am sure they will totally enjoy the nutritional benefits of this salad!

Ingredient:

3 cups chopped spinach

1/2 cup diced avocado

1/2 cup dulse shredded

1/2 cup cucumber, diced

1/2 cup Hemp seeds

Dressing

Combine 2 Tbsp flaxseed oil, juice of 1/2 lemon, 1 Tsp Herbamare seasoning and add a dash of pepper.

Combine all ingredients and serve immediately for maximum benefit…

Hopefully, soon we will be able to consume this salad in Australia.
