Fruit and Vegetable Reboot

Feel like joining me for an energy boost?

Mango, Banana, Passion fruit & Orange

Mango, Banana, Passion fruit & Orange

I’m spending the long weekend cleansing my body by only eating raw juice and smoothies… just fruit and vegetables – that is it!

I’ve spent the last few days watching a couple of videos on Obesity and the effect it has on health.  It has also been the topic of my Nutrition studies this semester at Uni.  I could go on an absolute rant with this topic – but most of us understand already what overeating can do to the body – especially overeating of energy dense foods – despite how delicious they taste.

The end result is diabetes, cardiovascular disease and often cancer.

I know it is really hard to get 5 serves of vegetables and 2 serves of fruit into  your body each and everyday – in fact in Australia at present – only 6% of the  population actually achieve this!

Fresh fruit and vegetables are absolutely jam packed full of disease fighting, health promoting vitamins, minerals,  phytochemicals, fibre and antioxidants – they are absolutely  necessary to keep your body healthy.

So after a good dose of Joe Cross in Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead – I decided to  reboot my body and just do fruit and vege juices and smoothies for the long

Day 232 – Oh So Green Juice

Oh So Green Juice

Oh So Green Juice

I have spent so much time practising my Thermomix non raw cooking lately that my raw food intake has dropped to about 50%.  My body is absolutely craving green stuff…

So what more perfect way to get some green in than with a Oh So Green Juice!

Ingredients:

1 cucumber

4 stalks celery

1 apple

1 big cup of Kale

Method:

I currently do not have a masticating juicer, so I have used my centrifugal juicer to juice the cucumber, celery and apple – then I add the juice and Kale into a blender and blended.

It is not the ideal way to have kale juice – but it works OK for today’s purpose of getting lots of greens into me.

Nothing great tasting about this juice but it certainly will give you an antioxidant and vitamin boost!

Day 193 – Cold and Flu Juice

With Winter approaching – so are the sniffles around the house…

You’ll be amazed at the effect that this juice has on the whines around the house in the morning… the mere mention of me offering to prepare this juice miraculously drives the symptoms of a cold right away from both my children 🙂

Honestly, this is a fabulous cold fighter and I drink it at least twice a day if I feel a cold coming on.  I have found that it does stop a cold from taking hold… and I actually like it… although no one else in my house does… perhaps it’s the garlic.

Give it a go if you are serious about stopping a cold from taking over.

Ingredients:

2 lemons

1 clove garlic

1/2 inch of ginger

1 apple

1 pear

1 cup hot water

1 Tbsp. raw honey

Juice the lemons, garlic, ginger, apple and pear and combine with the hot water and honey and drink to drive away that cold!

To your good health.

This is a great juice from Dr Sandra Cabot – tah Sandra you’ve kept me on my feet with this juice more than once!

Day 107 – Tropical Twist Juice Icy Pops

Tropical Twist Juice Icy Pops

Tropical Twist Juice Icy Pops

My son absolutely loves devouring Quelches and Smoozes.  These are frozen juicy pops.  The Quelches contain reconstituted fruit juice, preservatives and sulphites.  The Smoozes are made from fresh coconut milk and fresh juice and contain natural preservatives. The Smoozes are quite expensive.  When I say my son devours these frozen treats, I mean he’d have 3-4 Quelches at a time.  I’m not really happy about it.  So I’ve decided to make some homemade ones that only have goodness in them.

He usually loves a fresh juice if I make he one – so no reason why he is not going to love these.

After some digging around in the plastic containers cupboard, I managed to find some of those Tupperware icy pole moulds… Off we go!

Ingredients:

1/4 medium pineapple

1 lime

1 kiwi fruit

1 mango

1/2 cup young thai coconut water

1 tsp. agave nectar

Method:

Juice the pineapple, lime and kiwi (if your juicer can handle mango – juice that too).

In a blender blend the juice with the coconut water and agave (I also added in my mango flesh at this stage).

Pour juice mixture into moulds and freeze until solid 🙂

Can’t wait to see if he likes these instead of the Quelches 🙂

Giving credit where credit is due…

This juice recipe has come from Jenny Ross and Doreen Virtues book ‘The Art of Raw Living Food’.

PS. He loved them – it was great to come home and see he demolished these instead of seeing a bunch of quelch wrappers left on the couch (and there were quelches in the fridge – he just chose these instead). 🙂

Day 90 – Zesty Orange Juice

Morning Glory

Morning Glory

The sun has been streaming into my kitchen every morning this week and strangely in the garden, sunflowers are appearing here and there. A huge bag of unopened oranges lie next to the fruit bowl and I’ve decided today it will be Zesty Orange Juice to spring load me and bounce me off to work.

And it was just the thing!

Ingredients:

8 oranges

1 lemon

1/4 inch ginger

Juice all ingredients and drink immediately…

Then spring into your day feeling full of golden light and vitality.
